Frequently Asked Questions

What does a chiropractor do?

A chiropractor uses spinal adjustments or manipulations to gently move your spine into proper alignment so your body and all its systems are properly supported for optimal health. Chiropractors may also provide health education and guidance about lifestyle behaviors, healthy living, or advice on how to keep your spine and your body in good health between adjustments. Although they work with the spine, they treat a wide array of health issues, not just back or neck pain.

What happens during a chiropractic visit?

First, our doctors will take a health history and perform a general exam to determine what symptoms you're experiencing. Based on the information from the exam, they will utilize specific adjustments aimed at improving or relieving your symptoms and helping you achieve better health. Each adjustment uses a controlled force to realign an individual joint that has become misaligned or is otherwise not functioning correctly. At the end of your exam, we will discuss strategies for maintaining your health between adjustments.

Is chiropractic adjustment safe?

Yes, chiropractic spinal adjustments have been used successfully for many, many years to treat a range of health issues. Chiropractors go through years of training in technique and anatomy of the spine including the neck, so they understand how to assess the spine and determine where and how adjustments need to be made.

How does chiropractic care “work” to treat medical problems?

Your spine contains many nerves that branch off to serve every area of the body. When the spine is out of alignment, it can create pressure points that interfere with the nerve signals necessary for proper organ and tissue function. By making sure the spine stays in proper alignment, the nerves are able to transmit messages from your brain to the rest of your body so your health remains optimized.

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is a type of treatment that manipulates the muscles and soft tissues to help relieve stiffness, soreness and pain, and to relieve stress and anxiety. It can also help promote greater flexibility and aid in healing after an accident, illness, injury or surgery.

How can massage therapy be used to treat health issues?

Massage therapy is ideal for relieving stress, which has been linked with many health issues including heart disease, stroke, dementia, digestive disorders, chronic depression and more. Massage helps remove toxins that build up in the body by stimulating the lymphatic system, and it also promotes healthy circulation to enable oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood to reach organs and other tissues more readily. Plus of course, massage helps treat pain, stiffness and soreness in the musculoskeletal system by applying gentle, repeated pressure to sore muscles and joints.

Is it OK to have massage after surgery?

In most cases it's not only OK, it can actually be helpful. Some studies have shown massage can actually speed healing and recovery after some types of surgery, and because surgery can be stressful, it can also help relieve tension to promote better overall health. If you've had surgery, our doctors will perform a physical exam before massage and may also consult with your surgeon.

How long will a massage session last?

That depends on your condition, but most sessions are a half hour to an hour in length. Be sure to set aside some time to relax after your massage to enjoy the full effects.

Do I have to take off my clothes?

If you're having a full massage, being undressed can help you get the most benefits, but if you're uncomfortable, you might want to try wearing loose shorts or other loose, lightweight attire. A drape will be used to cover you during your massage.

How are x-rays used in a chiropractic practice?

X-rays can be used to identify sources of pain, numbness and other symptoms, to look for signs of disease, and to assess injuries so our doctors will be able to provide targeted, effective treatment for each patient. They can also show the condition of the spine and soft tissues and determine if there are any abnormalities or anomalies in your spine that can help ensure your treatment is customized to your anatomy. Plus, they can rule out conditions such as fractures or tumors that could be contributing to pain or other symptoms.

Are x-rays dangerous?

We use the safest, most advanced x-ray equipment so patient exposure to radiation is minimized. X-rays remain one of the most effective ways to evaluate injuries and diseases affecting the bones and other structures and parts of the body, including the spine and neck, and foregoing an x-ray can mean serious issues affecting your spine may be overlooked.

What are the advantages of having an x-ray in your office
compared to going to a diagnostic imaging center?

We use state-of-the-art x-ray equipment and techniques for the safest, most accurate x-ray images, and because the x-rays can be take on site, you'll have your results faster – and so will we. That means your chiropractic treatment can start much more quickly than would be possible if you had to go to an off-site diagnostic imaging center to have your x-rays taken. And because the x-rays are completed in our office, it also means you won't have to worry about traveling to another location or filling out additional time-consuming paperwork.

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a treatment that utilizes cold temperatures to decrease inflammation and pain.

How can Cryotherapy help?

Cryotherapy can help with muscle pain, as well as some joint and muscle disorders, such as arthritis. It may also promote faster healing of athletic injuries. Doctors have long recommended using ice packs on injured and painful muscles. Doing so may increase blood circulation after the ice pack is removed, promoting healing and pain relief.

What is non-surgical Spinal Decompression?

Spinal Decompression employs a sophisticated approach that gradually lengthens the spine without triggering muscle contractions, ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure. The technology underpinning this treatment is at the forefront of advancement, with precision-driven computers continuously recalculating and personalizing the therapy to align with each patient's unique spinal curvature.

What Patients Are Saying

Nina B.

"This was my first visit to American Chiropractic. Everyone was very friendly, from the moment I arrived, to making a future appointment, before I left. Dr Weinzimer was kind, and listened about my areas of concern. He explained how the visit would go, then I went to another room where a hot, moist pack was put over my entire back. After that, he adjusted the areas that had been bothering me. I will be going back for more adjustments. Thank you Dr. Weinzimer and staff for a very good experience. "
